2023-04-06Add VACUUM/ANALYZE BUFFER_USAGE_LIMIT optionDavid Rowley
Add new options to the VACUUM and ANALYZE commands called BUFFER_USAGE_LIMIT to allow users more control over how large to make the buffer access strategy that is used to limit the usage of buffers in shared buffers. Larger rings can allow VACUUM to run more quickly but have the drawback of VACUUM possibly evicting more buffers from shared buffers that might be useful for other queries running on the database. Here we also add a new GUC named vacuum_buffer_usage_limit which controls how large to make the access strategy when it's not specified in the VACUUM/ANALYZE command. This defaults to 256KB, which is the same size as the access strategy was prior to this change. This setting also controls how large to make the buffer access strategy for autovacuum. 2023-02-09pgstat: Infrastructure for more detailed IO statisticsAndres Freund
This commit adds the infrastructure for more detailed IO statistics. The calls to actually count IOs, a system view to access the new statistics, documentation and tests will be added in subsequent commits, to make review easier. While we already had some IO statistics, e.g. in pg_stat_bgwriter and pg_stat_database, they did not provide sufficient detail to understand what the main sources of IO are, or whether configuration changes could avoid IO. E.g., pg_stat_bgwriter.buffers_backend does contain the number of buffers written out by a backend, but as that includes extending relations (always done by backends) and writes triggered by the use of buffer access strategies, it cannot easily be used to tune background writer or checkpointer. Similarly, pg_stat_database.blks_read cannot easily be used to tune shared_buffers / compute a cache hit ratio, as the use of buffer access strategies will often prevent a large fraction of the read blocks to end up in shared_buffers. The new IO statistics count IO operations (evict, extend, fsync, read, reuse, and write), and are aggregated for each combination of backend type (backend, autovacuum worker, bgwriter, etc), target object of the IO (relations, temp relations) and context of the IO (normal, vacuum, bulkread, bulkwrite). What is tracked in this series of patches, is sufficient to perform the aforementioned analyses. Further details, e.g. tracking the number of buffer hits, would make that even easier, but was left out for now, to keep the scope of the already large patchset manageable. Switch to a design similar to regular backends, instead of the previous arrangement where signal handlers did non-trivial state management and called fork(). The main changes are: * The postmaster now has its own local latch to wait on. (For now, we don't want other backends setting its latch directly, but that could probably be made to work with more research on robustness.) * The existing signal handlers are cut in two: a handle_pm_XXX() part that just sets pending_pm_XXX flags and the latch, and a process_pm_XXX() part that runs later when the latch is seen. * Signal handlers are now installed with the regular pqsignal() function rather than the special pqsignal_pm() function; historical portability concerns about the effect of SA_RESTART on select() are no longer relevant, and we don't need to block signals anymore. SYSTEM_USER is a reserved keyword of the SQL specification that, roughly described, is aimed at reporting some information about the system user who has connected to the database server. It may include implementation-specific information about the means by the user connected, like an authentication method. This commit implements SYSTEM_USER as of auth_method:identity, where "auth_method" is a keyword about the authentication method used to log into the server (like peer, md5, scram-sha-256, gss, etc.) and "identity" is the authentication identity as introduced by 9afffcb (peer sets authn to the OS user name, gss to the user principal, etc.). This format has been suggested by Tom Lane. Note that thanks to d951052, SYSTEM_USER is available to parallel workers. Bump catalog version. 2022-08-24Allow parallel workers to retrieve some data from PortMichael Paquier
This commit moves authn_id into a new global structure called ClientConnectionInfo (mapping to a MyClientConnectionInfo for each backend) which is intended to hold all the client information that should be shared between the backend and any of its parallel workers, access for extensions and triggers being the primary use case. There is no need to push all the data of Port to the workers, and authn_id is quite a generic concept so using a separate structure provides the best balance (the name of the structure has been suggested by Robert Haas). While on it, and per discussion as this would be useful for a potential SYSTEM_USER that can be accessed through parallel workers, a second field is added for the authentication method, copied directly from Port. ClientConnectionInfo is serialized and restored using a new parallel key and a structure tracks the length of the authn_id, making the addition of more fields straight-forward. 2022-07-25Process session_preload_libraries within InitPostgres's transaction.Tom Lane
Previously we did this after InitPostgres, at a somewhat randomly chosen place within PostgresMain. However, since commit a0ffa885e doing this outside a transaction can cause a crash, if we need to check permissions while replacing a placeholder GUC. (Besides which, a preloaded library could itself want to do database access within _PG_init.) To avoid needing an additional transaction start/end in every session, move the process_session_preload_libraries call to within InitPostgres's transaction. That requires teaching the code not to call it when InitPostgres is called from somewhere other than PostgresMain, since we don't want session_preload_libraries to affect background workers. The most future-proof solution here seems to be to add an additional flag parameter to InitPostgres; fortunately, we're not yet very worried about API stability for v15. Doing this also exposed the fact that we're currently honoring session_preload_libraries in walsenders, even those not connected to any database. This seems, at minimum, a POLA violation: walsenders are not interactive sessions. Let's stop doing that. (All these comments also apply to local_preload_libraries, of course.) 2022-07-08Remove HP/Intel Itanium support.Thomas Munro
This CPU architecture has been discontinued. We already removed HP-UX support, we never supported Windows/Itanium, and the open source operating systems that a vintage hardware owner might hope to run have all either ended Itanium support or never fully released support (NetBSD may eventually). The extra code we carry for this rare ISA is now untested. It seems like a good time to remove it. 2022-05-13Add a new shmem_request_hook hook.Robert Haas
Currently, preloaded libraries are expected to request additional shared memory and LWLocks in _PG_init(). However, it is not unusal for such requests to depend on MaxBackends, which won't be initialized at that time. Such requests could also depend on GUCs that other modules might change. This introduces a new hook where modules can safely use MaxBackends and GUCs to request additional shared memory and LWLocks. Furthermore, this change restricts requests for shared memory and LWLocks to this hook. Previously, libraries could make requests until the size of the main shared memory segment was calculated. Unlike before, we no longer silently ignore requests received at invalid times. Instead, we FATAL if someone tries to request additional shared memory or LWLocks outside of the hook. 2022-04-07pgstat: store statistics in shared memory.Andres Freund
Previously the statistics collector received statistics updates via UDP and shared statistics data by writing them out to temporary files regularly. These files can reach tens of megabytes and are written out up to twice a second. This has repeatedly prevented us from adding additional useful statistics. Now statistics are stored in shared memory. Statistics for variable-numbered objects are stored in a dshash hashtable (backed by dynamic shared memory). Fixed-numbered stats are stored in plain shared memory. The header for pgstat.c contains an overview of the architecture. The stats collector is not needed anymore, remove it. By utilizing the transactional statistics drop infrastructure introduced in a prior commit statistics entries cannot "leak" anymore. Previously leaked statistics were dropped by pgstat_vacuum_stat(), called from [auto-]vacuum. On systems with many small relations pgstat_vacuum_stat() could be quite expensive. Now that replicas drop statistics entries for dropped objects, it is not necessary anymore to reset stats when starting from a cleanly shut down replica. 2022-04-06Remove exclusive backup modeStephen Frost
Exclusive-mode backups have been deprecated since 9.6 (when non-exclusive backups were introduced) due to the issues they can cause should the system crash while one is running and generally because non-exclusive provides a much better interface. Further, exclusive backup mode wasn't really being tested (nor was most of the related code- like being able to log in just to stop an exclusive backup and the bits of the state machine related to that) and having to possibly deal with an exclusive backup and the backup_label file existing during pg_basebackup, pg_rewind, etc, added other complexities that we are better off without. This patch removes the exclusive backup mode, the various special cases for dealing with it, and greatly simplifies the online backup code and documentation. Previously, it was really easy to write code that accessed MaxBackends before we'd actually initialized it, especially when coding up an extension. To make this less error-prune, introduce a new function GetMaxBackends() which should be used to obtain the correct value. This will ERROR if called too early. 2021-08-05process startup: Remove bootstrap / checker modes from AuxProcType.Andres Freund
Neither is actually initialized as an auxiliary process, so it does not really make sense to reserve a PGPROC etc for them. This keeps checker mode implemented by exiting partway through bootstrap mode. That might be worth changing at some point, perhaps if we ever extend checker mode to be a more general tool. 2021-07-25Get rid of artificial restriction on hash table sizes on Windows.Tom Lane
The point of introducing the hash_mem_multiplier GUC was to let users reproduce the old behavior of hash aggregation, i.e. that it could use more than work_mem at need. However, the implementation failed to get the job done on Win64, where work_mem is clamped to 2GB to protect various places that calculate memory sizes using "long int". As written, the same clamp was applied to hash_mem. This resulted in severe performance regressions for queries requiring a bit more than 2GB for hash aggregation, as they now spill to disk and there's no way to stop that. Getting rid of the work_mem restriction seems like a good idea, but it's a big job and could not conceivably be back-patched. However, there's only a fairly small number of places that are concerned with the hash_mem value, and it turns out to be possible to remove the restriction there without too much code churn or any ABI breaks. So, let's do that for now to fix the regression, and leave the larger task for another day. This patch does introduce a bit more infrastructure that should help with the larger task, namely pg_bitutils.h support for working with size_t values. Per gripe from Laurent Hasson. 2021-05-14Refactor CHECK_FOR_INTERRUPTS() to add flexibility.Tom Lane
Split up CHECK_FOR_INTERRUPTS() to provide an additional macro INTERRUPTS_PENDING_CONDITION(), which just tests whether an interrupt is pending without attempting to service it. This is useful in situations where the caller knows that interrupts are blocked, and would like to find out if it's worth the trouble to unblock them. Also add INTERRUPTS_CAN_BE_PROCESSED(), which indicates whether CHECK_FOR_INTERRUPTS() can be relied on to clear the pending interrupt. This commit doesn't actually add any uses of the new macros, but a follow-on bug fix will do so. Back-patch to all supported branches to provide infrastructure for that fix. 2021-04-06Add function to log the memory contexts of specified backend process.Fujii Masao
Commit 3e98c0bafb added pg_backend_memory_contexts view to display the memory contexts of the backend process. However its target process is limited to the backend that is accessing to the view. So this is not so convenient when investigating the local memory bloat of other backend process. To improve this situation, this commit adds pg_log_backend_memory_contexts() function that requests to log the memory contexts of the specified backend process. This information can be also collected by calling MemoryContextStats(TopMemoryContext) via a debugger. But this technique cannot be used in some environments because no debugger is available there. So, pg_log_backend_memory_contexts() allows us to see the memory contexts of specified backend more easily. Only superusers are allowed to request to log the memory contexts because allowing any users to issue this request at an unbounded rate would cause lots of log messages and which can lead to denial of service. On receipt of the request, at the next CHECK_FOR_INTERRUPTS(), the target backend logs its memory contexts at LOG_SERVER_ONLY level, so that these memory contexts will appear in the server log but not be sent to the client. It logs one message per memory context. Because if it buffers all memory contexts into StringInfo to log them as one message, which may require the buffer to be enlarged very much and lead to OOM error since there can be a large number of memory contexts in a backend. When a backend process is consuming huge memory, logging all its memory contexts might overrun available disk space. To prevent this, now this patch limits the number of child contexts to log per parent to 100. As with MemoryContextStats(), it supposes that practical cases where the log gets long will typically be huge numbers of siblings under the same parent context; while the additional debugging value from seeing details about individual siblings beyond 100 will not be large. There was another proposed patch to add the function to return the memory contexts of specified backend as the result sets, instead of logging them, in the discussion. However that patch is not included in this commit because it had several issues to address. 2021-04-02Detect POLLHUP/POLLRDHUP while running queries.Thomas Munro
Provide a new GUC check_client_connection_interval that can be used to check whether the client connection has gone away, while running very long queries. It is disabled by default. For now this uses a non-standard Linux extension (also adopted by at least one other OS). POLLRDHUP is not defined by POSIX, and other OSes don't have a reliable way to know if a connection was closed without actually trying to read or write. In future we might consider trying to send a no-op/heartbeat message instead, but that could require protocol changes. 2021-03-15Make archiver process an auxiliary process.Fujii Masao
This commit changes WAL archiver process so that it's treated as an auxiliary process and can use shared memory. This is an infrastructure patch required for upcoming shared-memory based stats collector patch series. These patch series basically need any processes including archiver that can report the statistics to access to shared memory. Since this patch itself is useful to simplify the code and when users monitor the status of archiver, it's committed separately in advance. This commit simplifies the code for WAL archiving. For example, previously backends need to signal to archiver via postmaster when they notify archiver that there are some WAL files to archive. On the other hand, this commit removes that signal to postmaster and enables backends to notify archier directly using shared latch. Also, as the side of this change, the information about archiver process becomes viewable at pg_stat_activity view. 2021-03-11Don't consider newly inserted tuples in nbtree VACUUM.Peter Geoghegan
Remove the entire idea of "stale stats" within nbtree VACUUM (stop caring about stats involving the number of inserted tuples). Also remove the vacuum_cleanup_index_scale_factor GUC/param on the master branch (though just disable them on postgres 13). The vacuum_cleanup_index_scale_factor/stats interface made the nbtree AM partially responsible for deciding when pg_class.reltuples stats needed to be updated. This seems contrary to the spirit of the index AM API, though -- it is not actually necessary for an index AM's bulk delete and cleanup callbacks to provide accurate stats when it happens to be inconvenient. The core code owns that. (Index AMs have the authority to perform or not perform certain kinds of deferred cleanup based on their own considerations, such as page deletion and recycling, but that has little to do with pg_class.reltuples/num_index_tuples.) This issue was fairly harmless until the introduction of the autovacuum_vacuum_insert_threshold feature by commit b07642db, which had an undesirable interaction with the vacuum_cleanup_index_scale_factor mechanism: it made insert-driven autovacuums perform full index scans, even though there is no real benefit to doing so. This has been tied to a regression with an append-only insert benchmark [1]. Also have remaining cases that perform a full scan of an index during a cleanup-only nbtree VACUUM indicate that the final tuple count is only an estimate. This prevents vacuumlazy.c from setting the index's pg_class.reltuples in those cases (it will now only update pg_class when vacuumlazy.c had TIDs for nbtree to bulk delete). This arguably fixes an oversight in deduplication-related bugfix commit 48e12913. 2020-07-29Add hash_mem_multiplier GUC.Peter Geoghegan
Add a GUC that acts as a multiplier on work_mem. It gets applied when sizing executor node hash tables that were previously size constrained using work_mem alone. The new GUC can be used to preferentially give hash-based nodes more memory than the generic work_mem limit. It is intended to enable admin tuning of the executor's memory usage. Overall system throughput and system responsiveness can be improved by giving hash-based executor nodes more memory (especially over sort-based alternatives, which are often much less sensitive to being memory constrained). The default value for hash_mem_multiplier is 1.0, which is also the minimum valid value. This means that hash-based nodes continue to apply work_mem in the traditional way by default. hash_mem_multiplier is generally useful. However, it is being added now due to concerns about hash aggregate performance stability for users that upgrade to Postgres 13 (which added disk-based hash aggregation in commit 1f39bce0). While the old hash aggregate behavior risked out-of-memory errors, it is nevertheless likely that many users actually benefited. Hash agg's previous indifference to work_mem during query execution was not just faster; it also accidentally made aggregation resilient to grouping estimate problems (at least in cases where this didn't create destabilizing memory pressure). hash_mem_multiplier can provide a certain kind of continuity with the behavior of Postgres 12 hash aggregates in cases where the planner incorrectly estimates that all groups (plus related allocations) will fit in work_mem/hash_mem. This seems necessary because hash-based aggregation is usually much slower when only a small fraction of all groups can fit. Even when it isn't possible to totally avoid hash aggregates that spill, giving hash aggregation more memory will reliably improve performance (the same cannot be said for external sort operations, which appear to be almost unaffected by memory availability provided it's at least possible to get a single merge pass). The PostgreSQL 13 release notes should advise users that increasing hash_mem_multiplier can help with performance regressions associated with hash aggregation. That can be taken care of by a later commit. A new function EmitProcSignalBarrier() can be used to emit a global barrier which all backends that participate in the ProcSignal mechanism must absorb, and a new function WaitForProcSignalBarrier() can be used to wait until all relevant backends have in fact absorbed the barrier. This can be used to coordinate global state changes, such as turning checksums on while the system is running. There's no real client of this mechanism yet, although two are proposed, but an enum has to have at least one element, so this includes a placeholder type (PROCSIGNAL_BARRIER_PLACEHOLDER) which should be replaced by the first real client of this mechanism to get committed. This change makes it possible to specify sub-millisecond delays, which work well on most modern platforms, though that was not true when the cost-delay feature was designed. To support this without breaking existing configuration entries, improve guc.c to allow floating-point GUCs to have units. Also, allow "us" (microseconds) as an input/output unit for time-unit GUCs. (It's not allowed as a base unit, at least not yet.) Likewise change the autovacuum_vacuum_cost_delay reloption to be floating-point; this forces a catversion bump because the layout of StdRdOptions changes. This patch doesn't in itself change the default values or allowed ranges for these parameters, and it should not affect the behavior for any already-allowed setting for them. Background workers, including parallel workers, were generating the same sequence of numbers in random(). This showed up as DSM handle collisions when Parallel Hash created multiple segments, but any code that calls random() in background workers could be affected if it cares about different backends generating different numbers. Repair by making sure that all new processes initialize the seed at the same time as they set MyProcPid and MyStartTime in a new function InitProcessGlobals(), called by the postmaster, its children and also standalone processes. Also add a new high resolution MyStartTimestamp as a potentially useful by-product, and remove SessionStartTime from struct Port as it is now redundant. No back-patch for now, as the known consequences so far are just a bunch of harmless shm_open(O_EXCL) collisions. Allow the cluster to be optionally init'd with read access for the group. This means a relatively non-privileged user can perform a backup of the cluster without requiring write privileges, which enhances security. The mode of PGDATA is used to determine whether group permissions are enabled for directory and file creates. This method was chosen as it's simple and works well for the various utilities that write into PGDATA. Changing the mode of PGDATA manually will not automatically change the mode of all the files contained therein. If the user would like to enable group access on an existing cluster then changing the mode of all the existing files will be required. Note that pg_upgrade will automatically change the mode of all migrated files if the new cluster is init'd with the -g option. Tests are included for the backend and all the utilities which operate on the PG data directory to ensure that the correct mode is set based on the data directory permissions. Vacuum of index consists from two stages: multiple (zero of more) ambulkdelete calls and one amvacuumcleanup call. When workload on particular table is append-only, then autovacuum isn't intended to touch this table. However, user may run vacuum manually in order to fill visibility map and get benefits of index-only scans. Then ambulkdelete wouldn't be called for indexes of such table (because no heap tuples were deleted), only amvacuumcleanup would be called In this case, amvacuumcleanup would perform full index scan for two objectives: put recyclable pages into free space map and update index statistics. This patch allows btvacuumclanup to skip full index scan when two conditions are satisfied: no pages are going to be put into free space map and index statistics isn't stalled. In order to check first condition, we store oldest btpo_xact in the meta-page. When it's precedes RecentGlobalXmin, then there are some recyclable pages. In order to check second condition we store number of heap tuples observed during previous full index scan by cleanup. If fraction of newly inserted tuples is less than vacuum_cleanup_index_scale_factor, then statistics isn't considered to be stalled. vacuum_cleanup_index_scale_factor can be defined as both reloption and GUC (default). This patch bumps B-tree meta-page version. Upgrade of meta-page is performed "on the fly": during VACUUM meta-page is rewritten with new version. No special handling in pg_upgrade is required.
