2023-04-08Introduce PG_IO_ALIGN_SIZE and align all I/O buffers.Thomas Munro
In order to have the option to use O_DIRECT/FILE_FLAG_NO_BUFFERING in a later commit, we need the addresses of user space buffers to be well aligned. The exact requirements vary by OS and file system (typically sectors and/or memory pages). The address alignment size is set to 4096, which is enough for currently known systems: it matches modern sectors and common memory page size. There is no standard governing O_DIRECT's requirements so we might eventually have to reconsider this with more information from the field or future systems. Aligning I/O buffers on memory pages is also known to improve regular buffered I/O performance. Three classes of I/O buffers for regular data pages are adjusted: (1) Heap buffers are now allocated with the new palloc_aligned() or MemoryContextAllocAligned() functions introduced by commit 439f6175. (2) Stack buffers now use a new struct PGIOAlignedBlock to respect PG_IO_ALIGN_SIZE, if possible with this compiler. (3) The buffer pool is also aligned in shared memory. WAL buffers were already aligned on XLOG_BLCKSZ. It's possible for XLOG_BLCKSZ to be configured smaller than PG_IO_ALIGNED_SIZE and thus for O_DIRECT WAL writes to fail to be well aligned, but that's a pre-existing condition and will be addressed by a later commit. BufFiles are not yet addressed (there's no current plan to use O_DIRECT for those, but they could potentially get some incidental speedup even in plain buffered I/O operations through better alignment). If we can't align stack objects suitably using the compiler extensions we know about, we disable the use of O_DIRECT by setting PG_O_DIRECT to 0. This avoids the need to consider systems that have O_DIRECT but can't align stack objects the way we want; such systems could in theory be supported with more work but we don't currently know of any such machines, so it's easier to pretend there is no O_DIRECT support instead. That's an existing and tested class of system. Add assertions that all buffers passed into smgrread(), smgrwrite() and smgrextend() are correctly aligned, unless PG_O_DIRECT is 0 (= stack alignment tricks may be unavailable) or the block size has been set too small to allow arrays of buffers to be all aligned. 2022-11-12If wait_for_catchup fails under has_wal_read_bug, skip balance of test.Noah Misch
Test files should now ignore has_wal_read_bug() so long as wait_for_catchup() is their only known way of reaching the bug. That's at least five files today, a number expected to grow over time. This commit removes skip logic from three. By doing so, systems having the bug regain the ability to catch other kinds of defects via those three tests. The other two, 002_databases.pl and 031_recovery_conflict.pl, have been unprotected. Back-patch to v15, where done_testing() first became our standard. 2022-10-07meson: Add support for building with precompiled headersAndres Freund
This substantially speeds up building for windows, due to the vast amount of headers included via windows.h. A cross build from linux targetting mingw goes from 994.11user 136.43system 0:31.58elapsed 3579%CPU to 422.41user 89.05system 0:14.35elapsed 3562%CPU The wins on windows are similar-ish (but I don't have a system at hand just now for actual numbers). Targetting other operating systems the wins are far smaller (tested linux, macOS, FreeBSD). For now precompiled headers are disabled by default, it's not clear how well they work on all platforms. E.g. on FreeBSD gcc doesn't seem to have working support, but clang does. When doing a full build precompiled headers are only beneficial for targets with multiple .c files, as meson builds a separate precompiled header for each target (so that different compilation options take effect). This commit therefore only changes target with at least two .c files to use precompiled headers. Because this commit adds b_pch=false to the default_options new build directories will have precompiled headers disabled by default, however existing build directories will continue use the default value of b_pch, which is true. Note that using precompiled headers with ccache requires setting CCACHE_SLOPPINESS=pch_defines,time_macros to get hits. The generated resource files aren't exactly the same ones as the old buildsystems generate. Previously "InternalName" and "OriginalFileName" were mostly wrong / not set (despite being required), but that was hard to fix in at least the make build. Additionally, the meson build falls back to a "auto-generated" description when not set, and doesn't set it in a few cases - unlikely that anybody looks at these descriptions in detail. 2022-09-22meson: Add initial version of meson based build systemAndres Freund
Autoconf is showing its age, fewer and fewer contributors know how to wrangle it. Recursive make has a lot of hard to resolve dependency issues and slow incremental rebuilds. Our home-grown MSVC build system is hard to maintain for developers not using Windows and runs tests serially. While these and other issues could individually be addressed with incremental improvements, together they seem best addressed by moving to a more modern build system. After evaluating different build system choices, we chose to use meson, to a good degree based on the adoption by other open source projects. We decided that it's more realistic to commit a relatively early version of the new build system and mature it in tree. This commit adds an initial version of a meson based build system. It supports building postgres on at least AIX, FreeBSD, Linux, macOS, NetBSD, OpenBSD, Solaris and Windows (however only gcc is supported on aix, solaris). For Windows/MSVC postgres can now be built with ninja (faster, particularly for incremental builds) and msbuild (supporting the visual studio GUI, but building slower). Several aspects (e.g. Windows rc file generation, PGXS compatibility, LLVM bitcode generation, documentation adjustments) are done in subsequent commits requiring further review. Other aspects (e.g. not installing test-only extensions) are not yet addressed. When building on Windows with msbuild, builds are slower when using a visual studio version older than 2019, because those versions do not support MultiToolTask, required by meson for intra-target parallelism. The plan is to remove the MSVC specific build system in src/tools/msvc soon after reaching feature parity. However, we're not planning to remove the autoconf/make build system in the near future. Likely we're going to keep at least the parts required for PGXS to keep working around until all supported versions build with meson. 2022-07-06Change internal RelFileNode references to RelFileNumber or RelFileLocator.Robert Haas
We have been using the term RelFileNode to refer to either (1) the integer that is used to name the sequence of files for a certain relation within the directory set aside for that tablespace/database combination; or (2) that value plus the OIDs of the tablespace and database; or occasionally (3) the whole series of files created for a relation based on those values. Using the same name for more than one thing is confusing. Replace RelFileNode with RelFileNumber when we're talking about just the single number, i.e. (1) from above, and with RelFileLocator when we're talking about all the things that are needed to locate a relation's files on disk, i.e. (2) from above. In the places where we refer to (3) as a relfilenode, instead refer to "relation storage". Since there is a ton of SQL code in the world that knows about pg_class.relfilenode, don't change the name of that column, or of other SQL-facing things that derive their name from it. On the other hand, do adjust closely-related internal terminology. For example, the structure member names dbNode and spcNode appear to be derived from the fact that the structure itself was called RelFileNode, so change those to dbOid and spcOid. Likewise, various variables with names like rnode and relnode get renamed appropriately, according to how they're being used in context. Hopefully, this is clearer than before. It is also preparation for future patches that intend to widen the relfilenumber fields from its current width of 32 bits. Variables that store a relfilenumber are now declared as type RelFileNumber rather than type Oid; right now, these are the same, but that can now more easily be changed. 2022-03-29Add new block-by-block strategy for CREATE DATABASE.Robert Haas
Because this strategy logs changes on a block-by-block basis, it avoids the need to checkpoint before and after the operation. However, because it logs each changed block individually, it might generate a lot of extra write-ahead logging if the template database is large. Therefore, the older strategy remains available via a new STRATEGY parameter to CREATE DATABASE, and a corresponding --strategy option to createdb. Somewhat controversially, this patch assembles the list of relations to be copied to the new database by reading the pg_class relation of the template database. Cross-database access like this isn't normally possible, but it can be made to work here because there can't be any connections to the database being copied, nor can it contain any in-doubt transactions. Even so, we have to use lower-level interfaces than normal, since the table scan and relcache interfaces will not work for a database to which we're not connected. The advantage of this approach is that we do not need to rely on the filesystem to determine what ought to be copied, but instead on PostgreSQL's own knowledge of the database structure. 2022-02-11Replace Test::More plans with done_testingDaniel Gustafsson
Rather than doing manual book keeping to plan the number of tests to run in each TAP suite, conclude each run with done_testing() summing up the the number of tests that ran. This removes the need for maintaning and updating the plan count at the expense of an accurate count of remaining during the test suite runtime. 2021-10-24Move Perl test modules to a better namespaceAndrew Dunstan
The five modules in our TAP test framework all had names in the top level namespace. This is unwise because, even though we're not exporting them to CPAN, the names can leak, for example if they are exported by the RPM build process. We therefore move the modules to the PostgreSQL::Test namespace. In the process PostgresNode is renamed to Cluster, and TestLib is renamed to Utils. PostgresVersion becomes simply PostgreSQL::Version, to avoid possible confusion about what it's the version of. 2021-09-28Fix instability in contrib/bloom TAP tests.Tom Lane
It turns out that the instability complained of in commit d3c09b9b1 has an embarrassingly simple explanation. The test script waits for the standby to flush incoming WAL to disk, but it should wait for the WAL to be replayed, since we are testing for the effects of that to be visible. While at it, use wait_for_catchup instead of reinventing that logic, and adjust $Test::Builder::Level to improve future error reports. Back-patch to v12 where the necessary infrastructure came in (cf. aforesaid commit). Also back-patch 7d1aa6bf1 so that the test will actually get run. There is only one constructor now for PostgresNode, with the idiomatic name 'new'. The method is not exported by the class, and must be called as "PostgresNode->new('name',[args])". All the TAP tests that use PostgresNode are modified accordingly. Third party scripts will need adjusting, which is a fairly mechanical process (I just used a sed script).

The idea behind this patch is to design out bugs like the one fixed by commit 9d523119f. Previously, once one did RelationOpenSmgr(rel), it was considered okay to access rel->rd_smgr directly for some not-very-clear interval. But since that pointer will be cleared by relcache flushes, we had bugs arising from overreliance on a previous RelationOpenSmgr call still being effective. Now, very little code except that in rel.h and relcache.c should ever touch the rd_smgr field directly. The normal coding rule is to use RelationGetSmgr(rel) and not expect the result to be valid for longer than one smgr function call. There are a couple of places where using the function every single time seemed like overkill, but they are now annotated with large warning comments. Amul Sul, after an idea of mine. Bloom, GIN, GiST and SP-GiST rely on PageInit() to initialize the contents of a page, and this routine fills entirely a page with zeros for a size of BLCKSZ, including the special space. Those index AMs have been using an extra memset() call to fill with zeros the special page space, or even the whole page, which is not necessary as PageInit() already does this work, so let's remove them. GiST was not doing this extra call, but has commented out a system call that did so since 6236991. While on it, remove one MAXALIGN() for SP-GiST as PageInit() takes care of that. 2021-01-13Pass down "logically unchanged index" hint.Peter Geoghegan
Add an executor aminsert() hint mechanism that informs index AMs that the incoming index tuple (the tuple that accompanies the hint) is not being inserted by execution of an SQL statement that logically modifies any of the index's key columns. The hint is received by indexes when an UPDATE takes place that does not apply an optimization like heapam's HOT (though only for indexes where all key columns are logically unchanged). Any index tuple that receives the hint on insert is expected to be a duplicate of at least one existing older version that is needed for the same logical row. Related versions will typically be stored on the same index page, at least within index AMs that apply the hint. Recognizing the difference between MVCC version churn duplicates and true logical row duplicates at the index AM level can help with cleanup of garbage index tuples. Cleanup can intelligently target tuples that are likely to be garbage, without wasting too many cycles on less promising tuples/pages (index pages with little or no version churn). This is infrastructure for an upcoming commit that will teach nbtree to perform bottom-up index deletion. No index AM actually applies the hint just yet. 2020-08-01Invent "amadjustmembers" AM method for validating opclass members.Tom Lane
This allows AM-specific knowledge to be applied during creation of pg_amop and pg_amproc entries. Specifically, the AM knows better than core code which entries to consider as required or optional. Giving the latter entries the appropriate sort of dependency allows them to be dropped without taking out the whole opclass or opfamily; which is something we'd like to have to correct obsolescent entries in extensions. This callback also opens the door to performing AM-specific validity checks during opclass creation, rather than hoping than an opclass developer will remember to test with "amvalidate". For the most part I've not actually added any such checks yet; that can happen in a follow-on patch. (Note that we shouldn't remove any tests from "amvalidate", as those are still needed to cross-check manually constructed entries in the initdb data. PostgreSQL provides set of template index access methods, where opclasses have much freedom in the semantics of indexing. These index AMs are GiST, GIN, SP-GiST and BRIN. There opclasses define representation of keys, operations on them and supported search strategies. So, it's natural that opclasses may be faced some tradeoffs, which require user-side decision. This commit implements opclass parameters allowing users to set some values, which tell opclass how to index the particular dataset. This commit doesn't introduce new storage in system catalog. Instead it uses pg_attribute.attoptions, which is used for table column storage options but unused for index attributes. In order to evade changing signature of each opclass support function, we implement unified way to pass options to opclass support functions. Options are set to fn_expr as the constant bytea expression. It's possible due to the fact that opclass support functions are executed outside of expressions, so fn_expr is unused for them. This commit comes with some examples of opclass options usage. We parametrize signature length in GiST. That applies to multiple opclasses: tsvector_ops, gist__intbig_ops, gist_ltree_ops, gist__ltree_ops, gist_trgm_ops and gist_hstore_ops. Also we parametrize maximum number of integer ranges for gist__int_ops. However, the main future usage of this feature is expected to be json, where users would be able to specify which way to index particular json parts. Catversion is bumped. The following renaming is done so as source files related to index access methods are more consistent with table access methods (the original names used for index AMs ware too generic, and could be confused as including features related to table AMs): - amapi.h -> indexam.h. - amapi.c -> indexamapi.c. Here we have an equivalent with backend/access/table/tableamapi.c. - amvalidate.c -> indexamvalidate.c. - amvalidate.h -> indexamvalidate.h. - genam.c -> indexgenam.c. - genam.h -> indexgenam.h. This has been discussed during the development of v12 when table AM was worked on, but the renaming never happened. When maintaining or merging patches, one of the most common sources for conflicts are the list of objects in makefiles. Especially when the split across lines has been changed on both sides, which is somewhat common due to attempting to stay below 80 columns, those conflicts are unnecessarily laborious to resolve. By splitting, and alphabetically sorting, OBJS style lines into one object per line, conflicts should be less frequent, and easier to resolve when they still occur. The basic rule we follow here is to always first include 'postgres.h' or 'postgres_fe.h' whichever is applicable, then system header includes and then Postgres header includes.  In this, we also follow that all the Postgres header includes are in order based on their ASCII value.  We generally follow these rules, but the code has deviated in many places. This commit makes it consistent just for contrib modules. The later commits will enforce similar rules in other parts of code. In-core relation options can use a custom lock mode since 47167b7, that has lowered the lock available for some autovacuum parameters. However it forgot to consider custom relation options. This causes failures with ALTER TABLE SET when changing a custom relation option, as its lock is not defined. The existing APIs to define a custom reloption does not allow to define a custom lock mode, so enforce its initialization to AccessExclusiveMode which should be safe enough in all cases. An upcoming patch will extend the existing APIs to allow a custom lock mode to be defined. The problem can be reproduced with bloom indexes, so add a test there. This uses the progress reporting infrastructure added by c16dc1aca5e0, adding support for CREATE INDEX and CREATE INDEX CONCURRENTLY. There are two pieces to this: one is index-AM-agnostic, and the other is AM-specific. The latter is fairly elaborate for btrees, including reportage for parallel index builds and the separate phases that btree index creation uses; other index AMs, which are much simpler in their building procedures, have simplistic reporting only, but that seems sufficient, at least for non-concurrent builds. The index-AM-agnostic part is fairly complete, providing insight into the CONCURRENTLY wait phases as well as block-based progress during the index validation table scan. (The index validation index scan requires patching each AM, which has not been included here.) 2019-03-22Collations with nondeterministic comparisonPeter Eisentraut
This adds a flag "deterministic" to collations. If that is false, such a collation disables various optimizations that assume that strings are equal only if they are byte-wise equal. That then allows use cases such as case-insensitive or accent-insensitive comparisons or handling of strings with different Unicode normal forms. This functionality is only supported with the ICU provider. At least glibc doesn't appear to have any locales that work in a nondeterministic way, so it's not worth supporting this for the libc provider. The term "deterministic comparison" in this context is from Unicode Technical Standard #10 (https://unicode.org/reports/tr10/#Deterministic_Comparison). This patch makes changes in three areas: - CREATE COLLATION DDL changes and system catalog changes to support this new flag. - Many executor nodes and auxiliary code are extended to track collations. Previously, this code would just throw away collation information, because the eventually-called user-defined functions didn't use it since they only cared about equality, which didn't need collation information. - String data type functions that do equality comparisons and hashing are changed to take the (non-)deterministic flag into account. For comparison, this just means skipping various shortcuts and tie breakers that use byte-wise comparison. For hashing, we first need to convert the input string to a canonical "sort key" using the ICU analogue of strxfrm(). Get rid of deconstruct_indexquals() in favor of just iterating over the IndexClause list directly. The extra services that that function used to provide, such as hiding clause commutation and associating the right index column with each clause, are no longer useful given the new data structure. I'd originally thought that it'd provide a useful amount of abstraction by freeing callers from paying attention to the exact clause type of each indexqual, but that hope proves to have been vain, because few callers can ignore the semantic differences between different clause types. Indeed, removing it results in a net code savings, and probably some cycles shaved by not having to build an extra list-of-structs data structure. Also, export a few formerly-static support functions, with the goal of allowing extension AMs to write functionality equivalent to genericcostestimate() without pointless code duplication. 2019-01-29Refactor planner's header files.Tom Lane
Create a new header optimizer/optimizer.h, which exposes just the planner functions that can be used "at arm's length", without need to access Paths or the other planner-internal data structures defined in nodes/relation.h. This is intended to provide the whole planner API seen by most of the rest of the system; although FDWs still need to use additional stuff, and more thought is also needed about just what selfuncs.c should rely on. The main point of doing this now is to limit the amount of new #include baggage that will be needed by "planner support functions", which I expect to introduce later, and which will be in relevant datatype modules rather than anywhere near the planner. This commit just moves relevant declarations into optimizer.h from other header files (a couple of which go away because everything got moved), and adjusts #include lists to match. There's further cleanup that could be done if we want to decide that some stuff being exposed by optimizer.h doesn't belong in the planner at all, but I'll leave that for another day. The following options are added for extensions: - TAP_TESTS, to allow an extention to run TAP tests which are the ones present in t/*.pl. A subset of tests can always be run with the existing PROVE_TESTS for developers. - ISOLATION, to define a list of isolation tests. - ISOLATION_OPTS, to pass custom options to isolation_tester. A couple of custom Makefile rules have been accumulated across the tree to cover the lack of facility in PGXS for a couple of releases when using those test suites, which are all now replaced with the new flags, without reducing the test coverage. Note that tests of contrib/bloom/ are not enabled yet, as those are proving unstable in the buildfarm.
