Reading/Visual analysis paper #1

This paper is an exercise in careful reading and developing visual analysis skills.  Please read Tang’s essay on Roar, China (one of the class readings under week 4), provide a brief summary of the author’s strategies in reading an image (one paragraph!), and use those strategies to analyzing another, later woodblock print by Li Hua, Struggle, of 1947.

Write a two-to-three page paper about Struggle. This is not a research paper, and your paper should focus on visual analysis (there should be minimal discussion of historical information and/or artist’s biography; these can be mentioned in the brief, one paragraph-long summary of the reading). Explain Tang’s strategy in examining Roar, China, and how you would apply those strategies to a later print by the sam ARTH 151C: Modern China Reading/Visual analysis paper #1SQL e artist. Consider composition, tone, form. and shape, line, and/or space; is there an attention to pose, dress, setting, lighting? What visual elements and symbols does Tang emphasize in his reading of the image?  How does Li Hua address his audience? Does the artist make the same choices in his 1947 print in visually creating a narrative, drawing in the viewer, or capturing a theme?

Do not forget a thesis! You will be graded on the strength of your thesis, your argument, and the quality of your visual analysis – don’t describe the images: investigate how they  function visually.  You will also be graded on your writing -- aim to be organized, clear,  and analytical.

Papers should be properly formatted and typed, with a title.  This paper should be 2-3    pages long (500-750 words). Margins should be no larger than an inch or an inch and a half, and the font should be 12-point.  Check your spelling, punctuation, and grammar.
