feat(diagnostics): write main-process logs to the OS log folder - #1331
This pull request replaces the in-memory main-process log buffer with a new file-based logging system, improving reliability and diagnostics, especially after crashes. The new MainLogFile class writes console output to disk, handles log rotation, and includes robust flood and error handling. The changes update all references and tests to use the new implementation.
Migration from in-memory to file-based logging:
Added MainLogFile in main-log-file.ts, which writes all main-process console output to main.log on disk, rotates logs when exceeding a size limit, and ensures logs persist across crashes. It includes flood control (repeat/suppression summaries, line length limits, and rate limiting) and robust error handling so logging never breaks the app.
Updated all code to use main-log-file instead of main-log-buffer, including imports in cliMain.ts and handlers.ts. [1][2]
Testing and validation:
Added a comprehensive new test suite for MainLogFile in main-log-file.test.ts, covering log writing, rotation, error handling, flood control, and idempotency.
Removed the old main-log-buffer.ts implementation and its tests, as it is now obsolete. [1][2]
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Main-process logs are saved in the app’s logs folder, with a launch header for each run and automatic rotation after the log reaches 5 MiB. Logging failures won’t interrupt console output.
Save Diagnostics now creates a ZIP containing diagnostic information and available main-process log files, including up to 256 KiB of recent logs. The report includes the log file location and any file-writing error.
Documentation
Updated the packaged-build diagnostics checklist with details about log storage, rotation, and diagnostic exports.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
The pull request replaces the in-memory main-process log buffer with a rotating file logger. GUI startup installs the logger, and diagnostic exports include a bounded log tail, the log path, and the latest file error.

Thanks, this is a real improvement over the in-memory buffer, and the flood guard is well thought out.
Please rebase on main: electron/cli/cliMain.ts conflicts with 095955b (import of isDiagnosticModeEnabled).
On main the buffer is installed at the very top of main.ts, before anything logs (ef38e13). Here it is installed after requestSingleInstanceLock(), so lines logged while the module loads (error guards, dev HTTP cache, Linux switches) no longer reach the file. Could you take the lock earlier and install right after it?
Minor: the checklist says ~/.config/Openscreen/logs on Linux; the rc.3 Linux pass in the same file uses ~/.config/openscreen. Please check the case on a real install.

Thanks for the rebase and for moving the install behind the lock, that reads much better now. 🙌
CodeRabbit threads
formatArgs (main-log-file.ts:269): still open on ac92faf. JSON.stringify(undefined) returns undefined, so console.log("value:", undefined) lands in main.log as value: . The one-liner JSON.stringify(arg) ?? String(arg) plus a test would close it.
readTail guard (line 131): already covered by your try/catch in this head, so it can be resolved.
Linux path: confirmed lowercase. A packaged AppImage (built 14/10) ships "name": "openscreen" and no productName in its app.asar, and its userData is ~/.config/openscreen (no ~/.config/Openscreen exists). So app.getPath("logs") is ~/.config/openscreen/logs, and the "(case to confirm on a real install)" note in the checklist table can go.
zip.ts: I checked it against the format and it looks correct to me (local headers, central directory, EOCD, UTF-8 flag, zlib.crc32). The repo only ships zip readers (extract-zip/yauzl), not a writer, so a small writer on node:zlib seems a fair choice over a new dependency. Nothing blocking there. Switching the bundle from .json to .zip changes what users attach to issues, so @EtienneLescot will make that call at merge time.
Hi @marcgabe15, checking in: the CodeRabbit points from my last comment (e.g. formatArgs in main-log-file.ts) are the remaining step here. Ping me when it's updated.
@EtienneLescot formatArgs now falls back to String(arg) when JSON.stringify returns undefined, so undefined, functions and symbols are written as text. The other two CodeRabbit points were already addressed in earlier commits.

- Around line 235-242: Update the write path using `fs.writeSync` so it handles
partial writes by continuing until all data is written or failing the write;
update `this.bytes` only for bytes successfully written, not the requested
buffer length.
- Around line 120-128: Update readTail so a failure reading the archived log
does not return an empty string or discard already-read current log data; retain
the current data and report the archived-file error separately through the
existing error reporting mechanism. Preserve the existing failure behavior for
errors reading the current log.
- Around line 77-79: Update the argument conversion used by formatArgs to catch
failures from String(arg) after JSON.stringify fails, returning a fixed fallback
string so the console_[level] wrapper can still call original.apply.
- Around line 139-140: Limit the diagnostic file read in the `files.push` flow
before ZIP creation so oversized logs, including `main.old.log`, cannot be
loaded fully into memory or block the main process; preserve the existing export
behavior for files within the limit.
- Around line 130-131: Update readTail to check whether the byte immediately
before the bounded suffix is a newline: preserve the suffix when it starts at a
line boundary, otherwise discard through its first newline or return an empty
string if none exists. Add tests for an exact-newline offset and a partial
suffix without a trailing newline.
- Around line 233-239: Update the write logic in MainLogFile so an entry larger
than maxFileBytes cannot be written whole to an empty main.log and later exceed
the cap in main.old.log. Define and enforce the oversized-entry behavior for
both current and rotated files, and add a regression test using MainLogFile(200)
that verifies the selected cap behavior.
Review comments at @electron/ipc/handlers.ts:
- Line 1966: Update the diagnostic data passed to exportDiagnosticFile so
diagnostic.json does not expose the absolute path from mainLogFile.filePath;
omit logFile or redact it before serialization.
- Around line 1971-1972: Add an export-level test for exportDiagnosticFile that
verifies a successful ZIP contains diagnostic.json, main.log, and main.old.log.
This should cover the assembled archive, including the logFiles spread, rather
than testing readFiles and createZip only in isolation.

Take the single-instance lock right after parsing the CLI args so the log
file catches the lines logged while main.ts loads. Give an instance on a
custom userData its own logs folder on macOS. Report a failed tail read as
logFileError instead of failing Save Diagnostics, and use the lowercase
Linux config folder in the checklist.
Save Diagnostics now writes a .zip holding diagnostic.json and main.log
(plus main.old.log once it has rotated), instead of only the JSON with a
256 KiB tail. The zip is written with node:zlib, so no new dependency.
…as text
JSON.stringify returns undefined for them, which join() turned into an
empty string, so console.log("value:", undefined) was logged as "value: ".
…g when main.old.log cannot be read
A console argument that could not be turned into text threw out of the
wrapper before the real console ran. And a failed read of main.old.log
emptied mainProcessLogs although main.log had been read.
