I think the right way to do this is by taking advantage of Python's ast module. Most examples of obfuscation I've seen won't rename formal parameters and the like, which is totally doable if the obfuscation function understands the syntax of the code it is examining.

Getting to an AST is easy via Python's standard library, but getting back is hard. Therefore, it is probably best to avoid transforming nodes and use the generated AST for purely information gathering purposes.

Formal parameter obfuscation is a more thorny issue than I thought - since anyone can call a function in Python using the formal parameters as keyword arguments, its hard to modify a function without side effects (then again, this is true for function names as well). Here is an example:

def func(a, b):
    print a, b
func(b='world', a='Hello') # order doesn't matter as long as we use keyword args
Hello world

In any case, I think its fairly obvious that obfuscation should not be used on any sort of library or functions that are used outside of a module unless the entire delivery is run through the obfuscation function, such that called functions from one module can also be altered in the calling module. But now we are talking about a much more complicated undertaking, so I may push this feature off.
