Find your Mac model name and serial number
Use any of these ways to find the model name and serial number of your Mac.
About This Mac
From the Apple menu in the corner of your screen, choose About This Mac. The window that opens shows an image of your Mac followed by its model name. The example below is for a MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2021). About This Mac also shows the serial number, which you can enter on checkcoverage.apple.com to find the model name.
System Information app
Press and hold the Option key on your keyboard while choosing Apple menu > System Information from the menu bar.
Select Hardware in the sidebar.
The information on the right includes a general model name and these details:
Serial Number: Enter this serial number on checkcoverage.apple.com to find the specific name of your Mac model.
Model Identifier: Search for this identifier in the appropriate "Identify your Mac" article to find the specific name of your Mac model.
Model Number (part number): Search for this number in the appropriate "Identify your Mac" article to find the specific name of your Mac model.
To have System Information read your serial number aloud, choose File > Speak Serial Number, or press Command-4.
account.apple.com
From any device, visit account.apple.com and sign in.
Select Devices in the sidebar.
If your Mac is among the devices listed, click its name to see its model name and serial number.
Terminal app
Open the Terminal app, which is in the Utilities folder of your Applications folder. If your Mac turns on but doesn’t start up all the way, you might be able to start up from macOS Recovery, then open Terminal from the Utilities menu in Recovery.
Type or paste this command in Terminal, then press Return:
ioreg -l | grep IOPlatformSerialNumberLook for the serial number listed after “IOPlatformSerialNumber” in the results shown in Terminal.
Printed on the Mac or its packaging
A serial number is usually printed on the underside of your Mac, near the regulatory markings. It might also appear on the original product packaging, next to a barcode label. To find the model name, enter the serial number on checkcoverage.apple.com.
Important: If the logic board of your Mac was replaced during a repair, the serial number printed on your Mac or its packaging might no longer be active. To find the current serial number, use any of the other methods, such as About This Mac or account.apple.com. The current serial number might also appear in your repair documentation.
"Identify your Mac" articles
If you have an Apple part number such as MLH12xx/A (“xx” is a variable that differs by region), or a model identifier such as "MacBookPro18,1", you can search for it in one of the following articles to find the model name. The model number (part number) or model identifier can be found in System Information, and the part number might also appear on the original product packaging.
