From the Author

In both my personal and professional career, I live and breathe Spanish language education. It sounds weird to say out loud but looking back at my history with the language and the culture and people of Mexico I must admit, it's true!

Like many people, I took Spanish as a high school student. I took it mostly because I needed the language credits to graduate, but I also hoped to actually learn some of the language.

Unfortunately, I found Spanish class to be pretty difficult and overwhelming.

I felt as if many students around me were picking up what we were learning, but for some reason everything was going over my head.

I spent two years in a Spanish classroom reciting grammar exercises from a textbook out loud and trying my best to act like I knew what was going on so that none of my classmates would think I was stupid.

I wasn't completely unsuccessful in Spanish class; I learned lots of vocabulary, and I could conjugate verbs into many tenses. Besides that, though, I had no real working knowledge of the language.

Coincidentally, as I was finishing up my second and last required year of Spanish, a family friend told me about an opportunity to go to Mexico and live with a host family for a month during the summer while I attended Spanish immersion classes.

I figured I knew enough Spanish to get by, and I wasn't opposed to trying to learn more of the language, so off to Mexico I went.

When I arrived, it took me about two minutes to realize that I did not know any Spanish at all.

When people spoke to me, I didn't understand a word they said.

I also couldn't put together sentences well enough to even remotely attempt to communicate my ideas.
I learned very quickly that the real world of Spanish was a lot different than the fill-in-the-blank textbook exercises I was used to doing.

Being able to experience the language in a realistic setting helped me put everything together in a way that my high school Spanish classes had not.

During a month's time in Mexico, I did not become an expert user of the language, but I learned enough to have basic conversations, which felt very encouraging.

When I returned home, I took every opportunity I could to practice Spanish with my newfound confidence. I realized in even a short time I had fallen in love with the language and language education.

I returned to Mexico as soon as I could after graduating high school with not much of a plan other than I wanted to learn the language, experience the culture, and share my love of language learning with others as a language tutor.

Because I took a chance at learning a second language, I was able to discover a whole new world.

My Spanish enabled me to live in another country and connect with a whole new culture and people I would never have connected with otherwise. I gained a new level of respect for anyone who learns another language and/or moves to another country.

My time in Mexico wasn't always easy.

There were many difficult moments as I attempted to learn how to navigate a new language and culture all at the young age of eighteen, but I believe that's what made me the person that I am today.

Since that time I have dedicated my personal and professional life to language learning.

I have completed a master's degree in Spanish education at South Dakota State University, worked with social services, volunteered at an immigration detention center to serve as an interpreter for pro bono immigration lawyers, and did what I could to help Spanish speakers in my community.

I spent nearly a decade as a Spanish teacher and I am now an instructional designer at the collegiate level who helps professors and other language instructors design courses that engage students and provide the real-world skills that were so crucially missing from my own high school Spanish education.

My experiences have heavily influenced the way I teach Spanish.

I did not want my students to ever feel overwhelmed and incapable like I did when I took Spanish in high school. I realized that the way we are taught language is often based on outdated practices.

For example, the way you and I learn Spanish is not the same as the way a young child does.

I have found that many textbooks focus so much on grammar that the context part of it gets lost in the background, which keeps us from understanding how a concept functions in real life.

Although it is not easy to balance grammar and context, this book aims to provide you with a practical and effective balance.

I have found that learners are more successful in learning the language when it is presented in a way that more accurately reflects the real-world use of the language and is presented in comprehensible bits and pieces that connect with one another.

I don't believe that language learning should feel hard or impossible. I believe that anyone, even (or especially!), people who have tried to learn before but gave up because they got discouraged can learn a new language at just about any age.

You will find many books on the market today claiming that you can learn Spanish in time frames such as thirty days or six weeks. Or gamified apps that make similar promises but have ulterior motives to keep you logging in for subscription or advertising revenue.

The reality is, you can learn (some) Spanish in that time frame, but you won't have mastered every Spanish language concept.

I am writing this book with beginners in mind. It is going to present language concepts to you in a real-life context and break down the grammar in a way that is more digestible.

This book is intended to serve as a tool that you will use on your language-learning journey. It will give you tips, strategies, and the foundational information you need to get yourself going with everyday Spanish.

I also want to be sure to acknowledge that everyone learns differently. I hope that the way I present the information to you will be easy to understand. Some of you may understand a concept the first time you read it. Others may need to go back and review the concept again and again until it sticks.

We are all on different journeys in terms of what we want to be able to do with Spanish, and we are all coming from different places. Please use this book in the way that works best for you, and remember that a book will never replace the learning that you can get from a trip abroad or a conversation class with a fluent speaker of Spanish.

The bottom line is this-I truly hope that this book will make learning Spanish more accessible to people who want to learn, and that it will give you the confidence to continue your journey of learning Spanish.

And, maybe also an interest in various Spanish-speaking cultures along the way!

Though this is not a history book, I have included occasional cultural points throughout the text, to note some worthwhile information about various cultures from various time periods that use the Spanish language.

It's my belief that a true mastery of a language will include at least some measure of education about the history of the countries that speak that language.

¡Beinvenido! - you got this!
